Welche Eclipse-Installation

Hi Ben,
ich will gerne die neue Version 2.0 testen, aber ich frage mich, welche Eclipse-Version ich brauche. Muss es die riesige SDK-Installation sein oder funktioniert auch eines der anderen Pakete (z.B. RCP Runtime Binary)???

There is two ways to run

There is two ways to run RSSOwl 2.0. You can either download the release for any of the supported platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac) and don't require any additional Eclipse installation. The alternative is to install RSSOwl 2.0 into your Eclipse. For that you will require at least Eclipse 3.3 Milestone 5.

Settings

Is there any way to change the path to the settings, like in previous versions?
This is key for the Portable version, which I develop at http://portable.cubegames.net/rssowl and will be getting on PortableApps.com

Yes, this is possible.

Yes, this is possible. Specify "-data " to the launcher in order to change the directory that is used for the profile. You will also have to change a second directory called the configuration area. I did not find any argument for that, but you can change that in the "config.ini" located inside the "configuration" folder of the release. In there find "osgi.configuration.area" and modify it. Actually the profile directory can be changed from here too (osgi.instance.area.default). Is that even working for you, having a file to modify?

Btw, the profile directory

Btw, the profile directory is way more important for the user, since its containing all the bookmarks and news. Even if you can not workaround the configuration directory, it should still work for your case.

Great

2 more questions:

  1. Is there any chance you could add a section name in the INI so that I could write to it, since NSIS needs a [section_name] to be able to write to the INI.
  2. Anyway to disable the splash, the command line option -showSplash false doesn't work?

We are not using NSIS for

We are not using NSIS for RSSOwl 2. Are you referring to RSSOwl 1?

Yes, you can use -noSplash to disable the splash on startup.

No

I mean the NSIS launcher I'm making needs a [section_name] in an ini to read it or set entries.

You are about to write a

You are about to write a NSIS launcher for RSSOwl 2? Which ini are you referring to, the config.ini or RSSOwl.ini?

.

Correct, I'm writing the launcher now.
config.ini

Interesting. Could you

Interesting. Could you please open a bug report at dev.rssowl.org so that we can discuss this in more detail. Thanks!

Simple Task

Since this is an eclipse rcp product, you just have to modify two settings.

Open the file ./configuration/config.ini and change "osgi.instance.area.default" and "osgi.configuration.area" to these values:

osgi.instance.area.default=./.rssowl2
osgi.configuration.area=./.rssowl2/configM9RC2

On startup, a new folder .rssowl2 will be created in the root folder of rssowl, containing all application data.

Excellent Progress

I've been using 2.0 Milestone 5 since its been out, and I gotta say, Its becoming a very nice professional looking RSS reader. It took me a while to get used to the new GUI, but I got used to it :-) . So is tab options in milestone 5? I couldn't really find the options.

I also miss the preference on what browser to choose, (as in 1.2.3)

Internal OR Find Target Browser - Need that back!

I also couldn't figure out how to change the font height where the feed table is.

I love how it integrates with whatever theme your computer is using. (colors on windows classic)

So when are we expecting a final release? I'm sure beta's will be coming up next, then after RC's

But yea! please put that feature back!

It can only get better!

Brian

Great to hear that M5 is

Great to hear that M5 is usable for you :). You can enable Tabs in RSSOwl 2. I will add this to the FAQ at boreal.rssowl.org.

The internal browser will be added for M6 or M7 and will be as functional as in RSSOwl 1.

Please open a feature request for the font thing, thats not yet on our list.

We still have lots to do and plan for a final release later this year (nothing more specific, sorry).

Ben

Menu Separators

I'd like to have the menu separators back as well. Will that be added or the flat look will most likely stay?

What do you mean with "menu

What do you mean with "menu spearators"? Feel free to open a bugreport at dev.rssowl.org about it and be more specific.

Thanks,
Ben

Windows Classic Theme

This may only apply with the Windows Classic Theme. When you have Windows classic theme enabled, if you notice at the top where File > Edit > View > Go > News... etc..is, you will notice that it has a flat look. No separator between the menu bar and the actual application is there, giving it a "flat" look. ONLY when using the Windows Classic Theme can you see this.

Also where can I request a feature ?

Interesting. I just compared

Interesting. I just compared RSSOwl 1.x and 2.x and they look the same in terms of the menu. Do you know an application where this is different?

Bugs and Features can be added to dev.rssowl.org

Wow! and GeoRSS...

Wow. I'm eager to see the final product :)

I added information to my GeoRSS support feature request on sourceforge. With OpenLayers.org, you could add a GeoRSS map into RSSOwl with only 5 lines of code! If you need help, just tell me :-)

This feature would not only be great, but also make sure RSSOwl is not lagging being other RSS readers.

More reading at: http://georss.org and an example: http://slashgeo.org/georss.html

I'm also looking forward to

I'm also looking forward to testing out the new release. The GeoRSS map is a great idea!

Nice job

I'll check out the final version
